About the Program
Our healthcare system is in crisis. Recent advances in information technology open up a brand new frontier. A convergence is taking place between medicine and emerging technologies, making it possible to change the way we manage medicine and healthcare delivery. Focusing on the coming digital revolution in health, this module introduces how disruptive innovations work in general, and why digital revolution is finally ready to transform medicine.
As illustrated by many other industries, digital technologies create opportunities for new innovations and transform established practices. This module will look into wireless health solutions that will enable physicians, caregivers and patients to cost-effectively prevent, diagnose and monitor health conditions; manage treatment; and enable timely communication and intervention. We will also look into the adoption barriers, as well as marketing strategies for the new devices. These will be illustrated through lectures, case studies, multimedia and live debates on exciting startups as well as large players.
The course is unique in the sense it is new and synchronized with San Diego’s leading edge on the wireless revolution. By distilling the latest thinking and recent advancements in digital health, this course helps the participants gain insights into the coming digital revolution in healthcare, and get prepared for the opportunities and challenges.

Questions to think about:
- What are the new technologies in wireless health today? How will these technologies be deployed and adopted in the market?
- Many new technologies failed to cross the bridge from the laboratory to the marketplace. What are the possible barriers of adoption?
- It's not always true that a better standard (or product) will win over the market. Think about three examples that great technologies died because a different (perhaps even inferior) standard was chosen in the market (e.g., Beta vs. VHS, but please think about examples related to your job);
- What is the role of standards and system integration in the successful adoption of a new technology into healthcare?
