About the Program
Individuals with disabilities are now the largest and fastest growing minority in the world, in the U.S., surpassing the Hispanic population by 5%. This class will educate managers on the legal implications of employing people with disabilities, the value-added business opportunities this segment offers from a workforce, workplace and marketplace perspective and finally, the practical applications for properly engaging with and managing these individuals.
In exploring these issues, all four segments of the larger disability community will be addressed: adults with disabilities, whether born with or having an acquired disability, whether visible or not, maturing workers with age-related disabilities, Veterans with service-related disabilities, otherwise known as Wounded Warriors and even employees who have children or other dependents with special needs as these individuals bring some unique issues into the workplace.
There’s an old saying that it’s not what you say but the manner in which you say it that counts. When it comes to communicating with individuals with disabilities, it all counts which is why this class will address the impact of conscious and unconscious bias in every situation from initial contact or an interview to team engagement and performance management. And although the legal implications are important and issues of disability disclosure, reasonable accommodations and accessibility will be reviewed, for managers, the practical applications of verbal and non-verbal communication are critical.
Many managers often wonder if at times individuals with disabilities are recruited just to be compliant or to do the “right thing” but that is only because they don’t understand the direct business benefits of reduced absenteeism, greater retention and increased innovation to name a few, for employing this large, loyal segment of the population.
Participants attending this session will walk away with the two C’s of Communicating, Engaging and Managing an Employee with a Disability: Confidence and Competence
- An understanding of the regulations of the EEOC and OFCCP relative to the hiring and management of individuals with disabilities
- An ability to apply all aspects of disability etiquette by disability type inclusive of visible and invisible disabilities
- Knowledge of the strategic advantage and overall business benefits of employing people with disabilities
