About the Program
Technical know-how, subject expertise and IQ only get you so far in business today. Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, is the ability to manage your emotions and connect with others. This ability is critical in our culturally diverse, dispersed, fast-paced, global workplaces.
This course focuses on both the art and science of emotional intelligence. Participants will learn the latest research and scientific advances in the area. Participants will also practice techniques used by actors to engage in active listening, connect to an audience, connect to their own emotions and de-stress before a big event.
This interactive course will teach participants:
- A framework for understanding and managing your own and others' EQ
- A series of tools for building EQ, as well as practice and feedback
- How professionals, like actors and psychologists, use communication cues to convey a message and determine others' true feelings
- The latest research on the brain, emotions and performance
- Assess your own EQ, the areas of strength and how to leverage those
- Take home proven EQ exercises and learning tools that you can use yourself and with your team members, family members and others
- Learn how to read people, including the hidden messages in body language
- Strengthen your own emotional intelligence

Dr. Rebecca Johannsen currently teaches Speech and Communication at Mercy College in New York, as well as teaching Theatre at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Dr. Johannsen holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from the joint doctoral program at UC Irvine and UC San Diego. She also holds a Master's degree in Theatre from SDSU. Shortly after graduation from SDSU she founded Stone Soup Theatre Company, one of San Diego's most critically acclaimed theatre companies. Dr. Johannsen has focused on connecting acting skills with coaching public speaking for the last five years, working with a variety of clients to improve public speaking skills and emotional intelligence. She also actively works in the Off-Off-Broadway Theatre, producing and directing works at NYC's infamous La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club.
Dr. Camala Boyce is a founding director of the Summit Discovery Institute a non-profit organization with one of its research arenas dedicated to understanding the integration of mind (cognitive agility), body (physiological and neurological functioning), and heart (emotional intelligence) as it relates to decision making and ethical actions within organizational contexts. Dr. Boyce brings more than 15 years of experience in working with leaders and teams in developing emotional intelligence. Part of her work has involved outdoor experiential adventuring where team members support one another through physically challenging exercises requiring self and other social awareness. In addition, Dr. Boyce works with globally dispersed teams that have less opportunity for face-to-face contact where emotional and trust issues are central. In working with executives, Dr. Boyce coaches leaders on behaviors and practices that enhance emotional intelligence, interpersonal skill building and accountability. Dr. Boyce conducts research on emotional intelligence in the workplace within a doctoral program at Alliant International University; she received her Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Akron, a top-ranked program within the field.
