Terry August: Faculty Spotlight
Terry August is not one to sit still. He's actively shaping the Rady School into what he believes will be one of the best business schools in the world. August describes his position at the Rady School as a "once in a lifetime opportunity" which has led him to an illustrious career shaping the next generation of thought leaders.
August began his career by studying chemical engineering at Vanderbilt University and subsequently working for Clorox as a research and development scientist. At Clorox, August focused on vendor quality and manufacturing. He then moved on to a startup software company specializing in consulting and content management. August later obtained his Ph. D. in Business Administration (Operations, Information & Technology) from Stanford University Graduate School of Business and went on teach at the Rady School, now as an Associate Professor of Innovation, Technology and Operations.
August's research focuses on the economics of security. He studies how economic incentives can be used to improve security outcomes, particularly related to software. With the increasing level of cyber-risk faced by both businesses and consumers, August believes it is important to inform policymakers how to get this problem under control to reduce the enormous economic losses incurred each year.
As a professor, August actively works towards bettering both the personal and professional lives of his students by helping them become more informed and mindful thinkers. He helps students improve how they think about complex problems which in turn will help them become better decision-makers.
August's newest venture will be to launch the forthcoming Master of Business Analytics program along with other Rady faculty members.
"The program will educate future business analytics leaders to excel at identifying business opportunities with compelling potential economic returns, working with data and models to generate important business insights and communicating and working with stakeholders to enhance decision processes with analytics capabilities and provide successful business solutions," said August.
When he's not busy in academia, August likes to spend time with his wife and wonderful dog, whether it's going up to the mountains or walking along the beach. He has also played golf almost his entire life and tries to take advantage of the favorable climate in San Diego.
