Do Digital Distractions & Tech Demands Lead to More Stress and Less Productivity?

The compulsory demands of being available 24/7, as well as being 100% focused and productive at work and in life are at the root of stress skyrocketing in the workplace and is a key component in diminishing performance.

According to a study by Microsoft, the average attention span for a goldfish is nine seconds, but humans generally lose concentration after eight seconds, highlighting the effects of an increasingly digitalized lifestyle on the brain.

An entirely new set of physical, psychological and social challenges are a direct result of our technologically-saturated culture. Conditions like “tech neck” or “Blackberry thumb” are few of the physical side effects of our technological lives. This course is a game-changer for any working individual juggling the demands of digital distractions.

Topics

  • Discussion: Challenges with work, life, media balance - explore the pros and cons of virtual connectivity
  • Discussion: What is the impact of being available 24/7 personal & professionally, physically, mentally, socially?
  • Discussion: Present time versus virtual time- what takes precedence?
  • The effects of the digital distractions on the brain.
  • The effects of virtual world on personal and professional relationships and collaboration. Counterfeit connections.
  • Experiential components: Design healthy parameters and establish why those parameters are important on personal and professional level. Set practical goals to achieve balance and establish time frames.
  • Create a positive mind-set to support a healthy framework and learn practical tools for mindfulness and meditation in the work place.
  • Didactic exercises: The brain and its ability to multitask, the overload of distractions, attention spans, awareness vs. autopilot, the power of why.

ABOUT THE UC SAN DIEGO CENTER FOR MINDFULNESS

The WorkLife Integration Program (WIP) at the University of California San Diego Center for Mindfulness is dedicated to delivering outstanding customized mindfulness resources that have a positive impact on business, individuals, and culture while integrating personal health and well-being with business success.

The Center for Mindfulness is a program within the UC San Diego Center for Integrative Medicine and Department of Psychiatry. The foundation of our work lies in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness. The profound effects of this work are strongly supported by a large body of scientific research, some of which will be shared during this workshop.

Instructor

Jill Tupper M.A., Media Life & Wellness Expert, Corporate Leadership Trainer, Keynote Speaker and Executive Wellness Consultant

Jill’s expertise lies in Media, Keynotes, Corporate Leadership and CEO’s, for audiences and clients ranging from McDonald’s & Coca- Cola, Young Presidents Organization, ongoing segment as TV5 Life & Wellness Expert, Professional & Not for Profit Organizations from Junior League, BOMA and Universities. Her career as an international keynote speaker has spanned 30+ years and has spent 16+ years a wellness executive coach.

Jill has her M.A. in Leadership and B.S. in Occupational Therapy and holds certifications from the Chopra Institute and Martha Beck Institute in meditation and executive coaching. She is presently pursuing her training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at UCSD’s Center for Mindfulness.

Having worked with people from all socioeconomic levels, Jill has an uncommon ability to connect and relate to everyone she encounters. Her unique combination of academia and real life adventures from marathons, triathlons, climbing Kilimanjaro, working with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta and Ethiopia and building homes for the impoverished in Tijuana and around the world, set her apart with inspiring stories that bring her presentations to life. Jill is an entrepreneur and mom of two amazing kids.
