The Center for Executive Development Launches "Mindful Executive" Certification Program

The Rady School's Center for Executive Development (CED) announced the launch of the "Mindful Executive" certificate program in May, a course series that will help managers and executives integrate mindfulness practice into their workplace.

The program is the first of its kind in San Diego and one of the few such programs offered in the country. The Rady School's CED is partnering with the UCSD Center for Mindfulness, a globally recognized leader in mindfulness teaching and training, for the Mindful Executive program.

"The Center for Executive Education is proud to be partnering with the UCSD Center for Mindfulness to bring this unique program to San Diego," said Clark Jordan, assistant dean of Undergraduate Programs at the Rady School. "By joining the expertise of the instructors at the UCSD Center for Mindfulness with the recognized excellence of our CED executive education courses, we are able to offer an amazing certificate program."

Research has shown that practicing mindfulness improves concentration and focus, reduces stress, and makes people more efficient and effective, both personally as well as at work. This type of empirical support for the benefits of mindfulness practice is the foundation for the Mindful Executive certificate program.

Mindfulness principles are woven throughout each of the courses included in the certificate program. Starting with a foundational training in mindfulness in the Mindful Leadership course, participants will learn how to cultivate a present-moment awareness in their daily lives and into their leadership role. Throughout the other courses, they will then explore methods for integrating that capacity into many other skills necessary in the workplace, such as decision-making, emotional intelligence and communication.

"People who engage in mindfulness trainings have told us that they become more aware of their own stress level and as a result are better able to manage it, they have less emotional reactivity and are more resilient in the face of challenges," said Christy Cassisa, director of WorkLife Integration Programs at the UCSD Center for Mindfulness. "Stress is recognized as a drain on the bottom-line in all kinds of workplaces and the techniques learned in the Mindful Executive certificate program will help managers become more self-aware, engage with others more effectively and achieve their greatest potential."
