About the Program
It will always test your character, sometimes corrupt, and possibly increase your lifespan. Power is widely recognized as the currency of the workplace. It is derived from many sources and in the hands of a skillful leader, provides a toolbox to get work done, with or without the legitimate power of command. Power and Leadership will explore the many sources and uses of power in modern organizational life and prepare you to be PowerSmart – better able to facilitate collaboration and innovation with a nuanced layering of hard and soft power tools.
- Reframe the workplace to update your thinking about organizations, culture and leadership.
- Explore sources of power and organize them into hard and soft power tools to understand how these combine to make you PowerSmart.
- Understand why position power becomes the least used source by the most effective leaders at any level.
- Discover how culture expertise may be the secret to building soft power tools.
- Identify your personal power motive and connect it to your career strategy.
- Investigate how the job of “getting there” might require different tools than “being there” and why bad habits in your power style might need to go.
Sign-up and learn to build and use power more effectively for yourself, your team, and your organization. Participants will build a stronger inventory of power tools, and learn how to combine power tools with knowledge of culture, situational awareness, and a bias for action to become PowerSmart.
This course has been designed for mid-level to senior managers and individual contributors eager to expand their leadership capabilities and increase their influence and impact at work.
Mary A. McKay, ED.D. is a member of the teaching faculty at the Rady School of Management, University of California San Diego where she has built a reputation for high-demand/high-reward student experiences. Her academic interests include leadership, diverse teams, personal ethics, and leader development. In 2016, Mary was honored with a Distinguished Teaching Award by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at UCSD. In 2017, she was featured in the series Behind the Lectern, published by the UCSD Guardian. She was also part of the leadership team who developed UCSD’s new Business Psychology major. On the horizon is her new UCSD Global Seminar offering to be taught in Dublin and London in the summer of 2019. This 5-week course encompasses topics of leadership and diverse teams, focusing on issues relating to the global war for talent.
In addition to her full-time appointment as a Continuing Lecturer for undergraduate programs, Mary is also on faculty at Rady’s Center for Executive Development where her course offerings include: Actionable Leadership, Power and Leadership, Leading Across Generations, and 360 Degree Effectiveness: Impact and Influence at Work. She teaches custom and open enrollment programs throughout the year.
Before joining Rady, Mary split her professional commitments between consulting and teaching. As a principal of McKay & McKay, she enjoyed a diverse client base across multiple sectors, and was recognized for her expertise in change initiatives and infrastructure development. Mary received her doctoral degree in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego, the first program of its kind in the United States. She is an experienced public speaker and group facilitator. Mary resides in San Diego with her family.
