Rady MBA student and UC San Diego Professor of Clinical Medicine, Christian Tomaszewski, M.D., honored as one of San Diego's "Top Docs"

Christian Tomaszewski, M.D., a UC San Diego Clinical Professor and Rady MBA student, was recently named a "Top Doctor" by San Diego Magazine, in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS). The "Top Docs," also known as the "Physicians of Exceptional Excellence," are chosen each year by physician peers who are members of the SDCMS. Members are asked to vote for board-certified physicians practicing in San Diego County to whom they would entrust the care of their own family members and patients. This year, 122 physicians were ranked "tops" in 35 specialties. Tomaszewski's medical expertise covers several specialties — emergency medicine, medical toxicology and underwater medicine. He recently served as the chairman of the education committee for the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Toxicology in 2011.

Tomaszewski's public service reaches around the globe. From 2006 to 2008, he was Medical Director of the Emergency Medicine Partnership between University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Hamad Medical Corporation of Doha, Qatar. The goal of that partnership was to improve the delivery of free emergency care throughout Qatar.

When asked about being selected as a "Top Doc," Tomaszewski joked, "At least things will be more equitable at home now. I found out yesterday my wife was also named a "Top Doc" in San Diego."

In addition to being honored as one of San Diego's "Top Docs," Tomaszewski was also named 2012 Attending Physician of the Year at UC San Diego.

Tomaszewski originally trained in marine biology, obtaining a master's degree in the subject. He completed an emergency medicine residency at East Carolina University in North Carolina in 1989 followed by a fellowship in medical toxicology at Denver General Hospital and the University of Colorado.

Tomaszewski decided to further expand his knowledge and enrolled in the UC San Diego Rady School of Management's MBA program. "For years, I have been looking for a way to build on my administrative knowledge from directing overseas projects," he said. "I find that my Rady MBA classes are personally rewarding and really do help in my role directing operations in our emergency departments. With the coming changes in health care delivery and reimbursement, an MBA will be invaluable." Tomaszewski will receive his MBA in June 2013.

Tomaszewski maintains his love of marine biology and diving, serving as a medical provider in the UC San Diego Hyperbaric Division, where he is a certified diving medical examiner and a member of the national board examination committee for Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.

He has over 50 peer reviewed publications, mainly focused on novel treatments for carbon monoxide poisoning and cardiotoxicity from calcium channel and beta blockers
