Profile
Richard Faltings conducts empirical research on the optimal design of digital platforms, with an emphasis on addressing dynamic externalities—how decisions by platform users today affect other users tomorrow. One stream of his research analyzes cancellation policies within the trucking industry, using novel data from an auctions platform to inform both firm strategy and public policy. In other work, he uses reinforcement learning to solve for optimal dynamic prices for micromobility services and evaluates the resulting effects on competing firms and rider welfare.
He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin, where his doctoral work was supported by a Twitch Research Fellowship and various graduate fellowships. He also holds an MA and BA from the University of St. Gallen in his native Switzerland.
