Daniel Chang

Professor of Practice

Profile

Daniel Haiming Chang is a Professor of Practice at the Rady School of Management, University of California San Diego. His career spans more than three decades of hands-on experience in engineering, invention, large-scale commercialization, and global company leadership.

Trained as an engineer, Chang progressed from product development and invention to founding and leading global technology enterprises. He has repeatedly led the full commercialization cycle of ceramic electronic components—from materials design and manufacturing process development to reliability validation and large-scale production. His most notable contribution is the Solid Matrix Chip Fuse, a technology platform that successfully transitioned from laboratory innovation to global commercial adoption and is widely used across aerospace, automotive, computing, and consumer electronics systems worldwide.

Chang co-founded American Electronic Materials, Inc. (AEM) from the ground up. Over more than 35 years, the company achieved sustained organic growth combined with strategic acquisitions, evolving into the AEM Group. Under his leadership as Chairman and CEO, AEM was recognized three times on the Inc. 500 list of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies, and the enterprise value increased by more than ten thousand times. The company became a global leader in surface-mount (SMD) protective electronic components.

Chang holds a Master of Engineering degree in Inorganic Non-Metallic Materials Engineering from South China University of Technology and a Master of Science degree in Materials Science from the University of Southern California. His professional journey began on the manufacturing floor as an apprentice, followed by rigorous engineering training and long-term engagement in invention, commercialization, and corporate leadership.

As a Professor of Practice, Chang works with the Sullivan Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Institute for the Global Entrepreneur, and other campus initiatives. He mentors undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students, advises on industry partnerships and innovation ecosystem development, and brings real-world engineering and entrepreneurial experience into the classroom through lectures, seminars, and applied mentorship.
