Rady School Dean’s Advisory Council Inducts Eight New Members, Effective July 1, 2024
The Rady School of Management Dean’s Advisory Council provides mission-based leadership, ambassadorship, and philanthropic support in partnership with Dean Lisa Ordóñez. It is composed of leaders in business, finance, accountancy, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector, who serve as advocates, advisors, and supporters of the Rady School and its community.
The Rady School is pleased to announce the induction of eight new members to its Dean’s Advisory Council, effective July 1, 2024. The following members will serve three-year renewable terms concluding on June 30, 2027.
Lorenzo Berho Carranza
CEO, VESTA
Lorenzo Carranza is an experienced industrial engineer with a Master of Science in Real Estate. With over 20 years of leadership in the real estate industry, he has effectively developed strategies to enhance shareholder value and has played a significant role in guiding his company’s strategic direction. His leadership has been instrumental in upholding high ESG standards and leading the company’s NYSE listing in 2023.
Throughout his career, Carranza has strengthened his expertise in business development and financial strategy, driving the growth of a publicly listed company. His oversight of capital raising and financing initiatives has ensured sustained growth for the company, while his efforts in defining operational objectives and nurturing client relationships have maintained operational excellence across the portfolio.
Fluent in Spanish, English, and German, he brings a global perspective to his work and maintains a rich personal life with his wife Mariana and their four children, enjoying sports like cycling, tennis, sailing, golf, and skiing.
Ron Coughlin
Chief Executive Officer, Board Member, Advisor
Ron Coughlin is a Senior Operating Executive with more than 30 years of experience growing iconic brands across Consumer Products, Technology and Retail. His expertise lies in transforming businesses by honing strategy, propelling innovation, upgrading talent, re-engineering cost structures and igniting global sales and marketing.
Coughlin served as Chief Executive Officer for Petco, leading a turnaround of the declining revenue company as CEO, starting in June 2018. During his tenure, the company added roughly 7 million customers, expanded revenues by over 40%, with digital and services revenues more than doubling.
Prior to Petco, Coughlin was with HP for 11 years, serving for 4 years as President of HP's Personal Computing segment, a $33 billion global business offering consumer and commercial products and services. He also spent 13 years at PepsiCo in a range of senior roles.
Coughlin earned his bachelor’s degree in international marketing from Lehigh University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He loves skiing with his daughter, batting practice with his college baseball-playing son, surfing, working out and taking their Lab Yogi to dog beach in Del Mar.
Mick Farrell
Chairman & CEO, ResMed
Michael “Mick” Farrell is ResMed’s CEO and has served as a director since March 2013. In January 2023, he was appointed chairman of the board of directors. Farrell joined the company in 2000, serving as president of the Americas region from 2011 to 2013, senior vice president of the global sleep apnea business unit from 2007 to 2011, and various senior roles in marketing and business development.
Before joining ResMed, Farrell worked in management consulting, biotechnology, chemicals and metals manufacturing at companies including Arthur D. Little, Sanofi Genzyme, Dow Chemical, and BHP.
Farrell holds a bachelor of engineering with first-class honors from the University of New South Wales, a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Susana Coppel García
President of Coppel Foundation and ESG of Coppel Group, Board Member at Coppel Group
Susana Coppel García is an organizational development consultant at the Coppel Group. She is also the Family Council Coordinator and President of Coppel Foundation and ESG of Coppel Group.
Coppel García earned her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from ITESM Monterrey, Mexico and Master of Science in Organization Development from Pepperdine University.
Currently, she is Member of Culture and Superior Education at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Sonora, Mexico and also Member of Educando Foundation and Pacto por la Primera Infancia Foundation.
Alex Katouzian '89
Group General Manager, Mobile, Compute & XR (MCX), Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
Alex Katouzian currently serves as Group General Manager of the Mobile, Compute and XR (MCX) Business Unit, including Voice & Music and Wearable businesses of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. In this role, Katouzian is responsible for the business unit strategy, chipset and software portfolios, P&L, customer relationships, ecosystem business development, and oversight of all program management and execution for the Snapdragon platforms. His responsibilities include a focused expansion into creating premium, end-to-end experiences across handsets, earbuds and headsets, wearables, tablets, PCs, XR, gaming and security.
Katouzian joined Qualcomm in 2002 as part of the Mobile business team focused on UMTS and CDMA product lines. Katouzian has been in the wireless and multimedia semiconductor system industry for 35 years. Prior to joining Qualcomm, he held various management positions at Brooktree Corporation and Conexant Systems, where he developed complete chipsets, software, and system solutions for multimedia, graphics, consumer electronics, and cellular handsets.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from UC San Diego with an emphasis in Semiconductor Physics.
Sean A. McCarthy, MBA '06
President and Chief Executive Officer, CytomX
Sean McCarthy joined CytomX in December 2010 as chief business officer and became a member of the board of directors and president and chief executive officer in August 2011. McCarthy has more than 20 years of experience in the biotechnology industry encompassing roles in R&D, business development, financing and general management.
Following completion of his post-doctoral training at the DNAX Research Institute (now Merck Palo Alto), McCarthy held research leadership and program management roles at Millennium Pharmaceuticals where he managed biologics discovery programs. From Millennium, he joined SGX Pharmaceuticals, where he spearheaded a wide range of large pharma partnerships as vice president business development and helped drive a strategic reorientation of the company from a platform business model to product-focused oncology company, leading to a successful initial public offering in 2006.
Immediately prior to joining CytomX, Dr. McCarthy was a transactional partner at Pappas Ventures from April 2006 to December 2010, where he was responsible for investments in therapeutic, medical device and molecular diagnostic companies.
McCarthy is an author on multiple peer reviewed scientific publications, issued patents and filed patent applications.
He received a B.Sc. in biochemistry and pharmacology at King’s College, University of London; an MBA from UC San Diego Rady School of Management; and a D.Phil. in cancer biology from St. John’s College, University of Oxford. McCarthy currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the California Life Sciences Association.
Aradhna Oliphant
Chief Operations and Strategy Officer, Wallis Annenberg Legacy Foundation
Aradhna Oliphant serves as the Chief Operations and Strategy Officer for the Wallis Annenberg Legacy Foundation. In this role she manages the operations of the foundation and provides oversight to its operating entities including PetSpace and GenSpace.
Originally from India, she is a recent resident of California having spent many years in leadership in the philanthropic sector in Pennsylvania. She has extensive experience in governance through appointments to public and private sector boards including the board of a publicly traded financial services company with over ten billion dollars in assets.
An entrepreneur by nature, she was among the first in the world to be granted a TEDx license when TED was exploring the roll out of locally produced TED conferences. Her passion for innovation and admiration for military service led to the development of the first-ever strengths-based program for post 9/11 veterans in the country which garnered a national award as well as an invite to be a member of the National Security Seminar of the US Army War College.
Oliphant is fluent in both English and Hindi; she holds an MBA from Rutgers University and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa; she received the prestigious Gold Medal for achieving the highest rank in the University of Bhopal, India, for Master of Psychology. She holds two Honorary Doctorates, one from Robert Morris University in 2015 and the second from Waynesburg University in 2016. She enjoys discovery, reading, and cooking and is the proud mother of two grown sons.
Jeffrey H. Silberman
President & CEO, Carleton Management, Inc.
Jeff Silberman is president and CEO of Carleton Management, Inc., his family’s real estate investment, management and development business.
Silberman previously worked as a lawyer for the San Diego law firm of Solomon Ward Seidenwurm & Smith. He joined the firm in 1986, became a partner in 1989, and became its youngest managing partner in 2000, a position he held for three years.
He is the Past-Chair of the board of the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego and Past-Chair of the board of the Francis Parker School, where he was the 4th recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. He is also past president of the board of Congregation Beth Israel, served as the chair of its Sesquicentennial Endowment Campaign and was the recipient of the Carl M. Esenoff Memorial Award for Extraordinary Community Service.
Jeff currently serves on the board and executive committee, as Immediate Past Chair, of the University of California San Diego Foundation, where he and his wife Karen were the recipients of the Chancellor’s Medal. Jeff also serves on the board and is President of Seacrest Holdings Corp. and serves on the board of the National Conflict Resolution Center. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with honors, in economics, and earned his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was a member of the UCLA-Alaska law review.
Jeff and his wife Karen have four children.
