Equity, Diversity, Inclusion. These words get thrown around a lot these days. Pick one and tell us what it means to you.

To me, inclusion means that all voices feel welcomed without hesitation, and valued without exception. Inclusion is demonstrated by curiosity to learn others’ life stories, and a willingness to fully appreciate how they are uniquely shaped by the intersectional components of identity. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, a group that is historically underrepresented in my profession, inclusion means a lot to me. I have appreciated UC San Diego’s efforts to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion during my time at the university.

Can you share with us a time when you felt supported by someone in the Rady community (classmate, instructor, staff, etc.)?

During my first quarter at Rady, I received unexpected news about the loss of a loved one. Their memorial service was scheduled on the same night as a group case presentation. My study group was immediately supportive of me and reworked our presentation with very short notice to accommodate my absence. I appreciated their professionalism, kindness, and empathy in a difficult time. I was grateful to be a part of such a supportive cohort of students.

Choose a (course/program) at Rady that left an impact on you. Why?

My favorite elective so far has been Professor Magnus Felke’s course, “Topics in Business Strategy: Managing Healthcare & Life Sciences.” As a cohort, we explored a lot of the challenges that affect healthcare delivery and patient care, and how disruptive innovations could revitalize our healthcare system to make it better serve patients. As a dual degree MD/MBA student, this course helped me conceptualize how I could use my business foundation to pursue innovation in healthcare, specifically to improve care for underserved populations.

How has your time at Rady impacted your career ambitions?

As I prepare to graduate with my MD/MBA, I am applying for residency in Emergency Medicine. I plan to devote most of my career to direct patient care in the ER. Part time, I aspire to use my MBA training in the sector of quality improvement, supporting healthcare providers in achieving the best possible outcomes for their patients.

Beyond your professional life, what brings you joy?

I love to spend time with friends and family. Beyond that, San Diego is the perfect place for my outdoor hobbies! I enjoy running, surfing in La Jolla, and bringing my dog, Sasha, to Balboa Park. I also enjoy going to concerts and staying active with weightlifting and CrossFit.
