Can you tell us a bit about your background and journey to pursuing an MBA at Rady School of Management?

I've had the honor of growing up amidst the diverse cultures of South San Diego, which afforded me a unique perspective shaped by a binational heritage. My parents, with their humble occupations, instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and community engagement. Their stories, combined with my experiences as a beneficiary of UC San Diego’s Chancellor's Associates Scholarship Program (CASP), forged a path that led me to San Ysidro Health. There, I've had the chance to evolve from an enrollment specialist to a business development manager, a journey that underlines the power of perseverance and community backing. As I eyed further growth, Rady's STEM-focused curriculum beckoned. I saw it as an opportunity to harness the strategies of top-tier businesses and adapt them to foster community programs, making them impactful and far-reaching. My path to Rady was paved with encouragement and invaluable support from many, especially Sophia Palomino (Associate Director, Rady MBA Admissions and Recruitment) and my mentors at San Ysidro Health, The Burnham Center for Community Advancement, and MyPoint Credit Union.

What does Latinx Heritage Month mean to you, and can you share how your Latinx heritage has influenced your career and leadership journey?

Latinx Heritage Month is a soulful reflection of the rich stories, the trials, and the triumphs of our ancestors. To me, it’s a period of profound introspection, gratitude, and collective celebration. Beyond the festivities, it embodies the strength of unity, promoting collaboration between cultures and echoing the belief that together, we can weave a future replete with harmony and opportunity. My Latinx roots have been the compass of my career, guiding decisions, and forging connections, allowing me to celebrate the past while continuously striving for a brighter, united future.

How do you see the intersection of your cultural background and your professional life? Are there any unique perspectives you bring to your field?

The values and traditions of my cultural background are reflected daily in my professional pursuits. Serving a predominantly Latino community at San Ysidro Health, I can resonate deeply with their aspirations and challenges. These shared experiences enrich my approach, bringing empathy and understanding to the forefront. Our culture reveres elders, and this sentiment echoes in my endeavors, guiding me to serve them with utmost dedication. This blend of cultural nuances and professional responsibilities not only enriches my perspective but also continually inspires me to achieve more.

What initiatives or projects are you currently involved in that relate to your Latinx heritage or community?

I'm deeply passionate about initiatives that resonate with our Latinx heritage and drive community upliftment. Currently, I'm championing two transformative initiatives. The first, in collaboration with the Burnham Center for Community Advancement, is the Behavioral and Mental Health Workforce development project. This endeavor focuses on increasing the availability of mental health professionals who can deeply connect with the communities they serve on both a linguistic and cultural level. Our vision is not just to provide care, but to ensure that the care is culturally relevant, holistic, and impactful. The lack of representation in this sector historically has meant many in our community haven't received the care they genuinely need, and we're determined to change this narrative.

Secondly, my involvement with the Mana de North County Board of Directors since 2022 has been incredibly rewarding. Working alongside a team of empowering Latinas, our mission transcends beyond representation. We are dedicated to lighting the path for middle school students, ensuring they not only dream but also have the tools and guidance to achieve their aspirations. We believe in the power of mentorship and have seen firsthand how one guiding hand can transform a young person's life trajectory. As the board works to bridge educational gaps and open doors of opportunity, I'm continuously inspired by the potential that lies ahead for our next generation.

In what ways do you hope to leverage your MBA to make a positive impact within the Latinx community or in your chosen field?

Rady’s MBA program, with its emphasis on innovation and data-driven strategies, presents a powerful toolkit to drive meaningful change. My aspiration is to couple this academic prowess with my passion for community development. In the ever-evolving world of healthcare, where I currently work, the need for sustainable and expansive outreach is paramount. I envision leveraging the insights and skills from my MBA to spearhead organizations and initiatives that are deeply rooted in community welfare, ensuring they make a palpable, positive difference.

What advice would you give to aspiring Latinx MBA students or professionals looking to further their education and career?

Dreams, when coupled with determination, have the power to shape reality. For every Latinx MBA aspirant, I'd emphasize the importance of passion and perseverance. The journey ahead will undoubtedly challenge you, but the rewards, both personal and professional, are immense. Actively engage with those who've walked the path before, soak in their insights, and let them guide your decisions. Financial hurdles might seem daunting, but explore every avenue, as countless fellowships and opportunities await those who seek them. Education is a beacon, and with institutions like Rady, you're not only gaining knowledge but also joining a community dedicated to excellence.
